Organizing Volunteer Opportunities in Times of CrisisEach time a natural disaster, or a man-made event occurs, employees and retirees want to know how they can volunteer their time and talents to assist in response and recovery initiatives, and they look to their companies to provide an avenue to do so. Join your fellow members of the CVC to learn how you can effectively mobilize your colleagues as volunteers to assist in these times of tragedy. Discuss ways to benchmark your company’s response with others. Hear case studies from UnitedHealth Group, Memorial Blood Centers, and Community Thread (Stillwater and Western Wisconsin Volunteer Action Center) as to how they work with individuals and groups who want to engage in a meaningful way. Obtain resources that will help you prepare for the next time you are asked to develop an implementation plan to address a disaster. Make yourself aware of resources available for the nonprofit partners you serve, for example, the Emergency Preparedness Plan template compiled by the City of Minneapolis, Department of Health and Family Support, and gain a brief overview of how disaster response works with an understanding of jurisdictions (city, county, state, and federal), the basics of the National Incident Management System, and concepts like risk mitigation and continuity of operations plans would be areas to touch on.
