February 2001 - 2000 CVC Award Winners AnnouncedThe CVC Leadership Award was awarded to American Express for its outstanding Community Partners Volunteer Program. American Express is a workplace volunteer leader because its employees and retirees not only believe in, but also live its values. An employee-driven Volunteer Council sponsors more than 60 activities each year, and more than 4,500 employees, retirees and their family members participated in 2000. Mark Hiemenz, Manager of Volunteerism, commented, "Receiving the CVC award adds more energy and makes our volunteers want to do more." Congratulations to Medtronic as the first CVC Spotlight Award recipient. Medtronic partnered with Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. to develop the Magic Lunch Box program. Over 300 employees were matched with preschoolers in seven Medtronic communities to help kids develop an appreciation for books while learning nutritional eating habits. Volunteers received a Magic Lunch Box with books and activities to donate to the classroom, as well as the opportunity to apply for a $5,000 grant for the organization.
