Cargill and the Star Tribune Honored with Leadership and Spotlight Awards

At its annual meeting on February 27, 2003, the Corporate Volunteerism Council - Twin Cities (CVC) recognized Cargill and the Star Tribune for their outstanding corporate volunteer programs with the presentation of CVC's 2002 Leadership and Spotlight Awards.

The Corporate Volunteerism Council's Leadership Award recognizes the outstanding leadership of the Cargill Cares Volunteer Council as well as the commitment of Cargill volunteers. Cargill employees and retirees are committed to numerous significant projects, exemplifying the company's dedication to nourishing people and community. The employee-led group supports and promotes volunteer projects that touch the lives of thousands of young people and families and nurture the Twin Cities environment. Activities include painting homes of low-income seniors through Metro Paint-A-Thon, an e-mentoring program with North Minneapolis' Olson Middle School students, and lake and river clean up efforts. More than 1,500 employees, retirees and family members actively participate in nearly 20 community activities each year.

The CVC Spotlight Award recognizes an outstanding special project or activity. In spring 2002, People Serving People (PSP) moved across the street from the Star Tribune. The Star Tribune rolled out the welcome mat by meeting with PSP representatives to identify opportunities for volunteers, to develop plans for educating employees about homelessness, and to identify financial needs. The Star Tribune publicized volunteer opportunities, held "get to know our neighbor" seminars, and arranged PSP facility tours for employees. The result: employees have initiated several volunteer activities beginning with help on moving day, and continuing with a reading program, regularly serving meals, donations, hosting a "shelter shower" and numerous other neighborly offers of assistance.
