MLK Day honors the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and serves to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
Together we can strengthen our communities, bridge divisions, address social problems, and move closer to Dr. King's vision of a beloved community.
Feed My Starving Children was open for volunteering at all eight of its permanent packing facilities where over 1900 volunteers packed meals for 2 hours on this MLK Day of Service. These volunteers were able to pack enough food to provide a FMSC meal a day for a year to over 1,100 children in countries like Nicaragua, Uganda and Haiti.
In celebration of MLK Day, HandsOn Twin Cities hosted a virtual event in which we discussed ways volunteering can be an effective tool for creating an equitable community. The panel was be moderated by Seena Hodges, Founder and CEO of The Woke Coach. Panelists included Johnathan Palmer, Executive Director of the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center, Laverne McCartney Knighton, Area Development Director for UNCF, and Nadege Souvenir, Senior Vice President of Operations & Learning for the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation. The topics included avoiding "voluntourism", the connection to education and action, how to be an anti-racist volunteer, and more.
